The Legend of Rivenroar
The Legend of Rivenroar
Five hundred years ago, the Castle of Rivenroar sat at the edge of the Great Riven River. Home to the Dukes of Tres Mes, Rivenroar was a grand fortress made for royalty. Before the Dukes ruled in Overlook, they ruled from Rivenroar.
All of this changed after the Great Cataclysm. Over one hundred years ago the Lord of Rivenroar, Duke Alban Du Winter went mad. It is said that he joined the Cult of the Hydra and began worshiping the old dragon goddess, Tiamat. His cult spread out through the northern portion of the Dukedom of Tres Mes.
Tiamat was once the dragon goddess of greed, queen of evil dragons. After a long war during the Age of Chaos with her brother Behamut, Tiamat was banished to Dis, The second of the Nine Hells by the Elemental Lord Ufel.
According to the legends, Alban and the Cult of the Hydra performed numerous profane rituals meant to bring Tiamat back into the world. The people of Tres Mes were fearful of their Lord and his cult. The Cult of the Hydra sacrificed children, offered gold and gems to Tiamat, and burned people alive.
It is said that there are strange and powerful portals that allow people to enter and leave the various planes of the universe. The Cult of the Hyrda was obsessed with finding these portals. If they could corrupt enough of these portals, they would be able to allow Tiamat back into the world.
Duke Alban du Winter’s own nephew eventually destroyed the Cult of the Hydra. Sir Aldric Du Winter, Paladin of Ufel, swore to the people he would stop his uncle and the Cult of the Hydra. In the end he did, but the cost was high. Gathering a large army Sir Aldric marched on Rivenroar.
The details of the battle have been lost, but what is known is that Rivenroar and the land around it was scorched and warped by Fire and Magic. The Riven River boiled away during the battle and the land was scorched. The land was permanently altered by the magic that raged across the area.
The battle ended as Duke Alban transformed into a giant hydra and meet Sir Aldric in combat. After a great battle lasting two days, Sir Aldric final slew the Hydra, thus destroying his uncle. With the death of Duke Alban, the Cult of the Hydra was finally broken and destroyed. The Cult of the Hydra has never been seen since.
The area around Castle Rivenroar was changed forever. The Riven River dried up and disappeared over the next 100 years. The Dim Forest grew up around the remains of the Rivenroar castle, swallowing it up and hiding it from the world. Soon people forgot about the Cult of the Hydra and simply remember the madness of Duke Alban.
